The TSX site - introduction
- Visit the site of the Toronto Stock Exchange
(Stock exchange or stock market: a place where shares in public companies are bought and sold. Definition from Glossary at investored.ca)
- Look over the home page to see what kind of information is available there.
Take some time to become familiar with it, and try to make sense of as much of it on your own as you can. You can figure out a lot of it without being told.- What is the Get Quote form for?
- On the Market Activity tab select Closing Summary. Explain each of the terms, Volume, Value # of Traded, # of Advances, # of Declines.
- On the Listings tab select Sector Profiles.

- What sectors are represented on the TSX?
- Select Listed Company Directory from near the top of the screen. Find company information for Canadian Tire Corporation, Ltd.
- See the current price of one share of Canadian Tire stock by clicking on Quote (or enter the Canadian Tire symbols in the Quick Quote form).
In the results listed under the heading Equity Search Results explain - Last Trade
- $Chng
- % Chng
- Volume.
- What information is provided under the heading Last Trade?
- Last Ten Trades?
- End of Day Data?
- Next to the chart, click on News. Browse through several stories. See what the source of the news is.
Go to the CNW Web site and click on About CNW to see how it works. - What does this imply about the reliability of this news source?
- Click on Company Snapshot.
Notice the brief description of the business at the top. Try to understand each of the figures for the company. - What does ($000) mean?
- Which numbers would you be most interested in if you were considering investing in the company?
- What is the difference between Annual Financials and Trailing 12 Month Results?
- Why is there a list given of other companies in the same sector?
- Look at the chart.
- Has the value of the stock followed a consistent pattern in the past year?
Look at charts of the company’s stock price for today, 3 months, 1 year and 3 years. (Notice that each chart is a graphic that you can save by right-clicking on it.) - Has the value of the stock followed a consistent pattern?
- In the 3-month chart, at what point would there be the greatest potential for a short-term investor to make money?
- What general trend is illustrated in the past 2 years?
- How does the 5-year chart change the perspective?
- Look at Last Ten Trades.
- Who is buying and who is selling the stock today?
